I have been a psychiatrist for 36 years. I trained at the University of Colorado and treated adults for the first 30 years of my career. From 2000 to 2002 I did a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UMass in Worcester. Currently I work with children, adolescents, and adults.
Over the years of my career I have been privileged to be a part of the dramatic changes that have occurred in the practice of psychiatry. Though I am constantly amazed by how different things are from when I started, I also know that the human condition remains very much the same. Psychiatric medicine has developed a multiplicity of tools, but the most basic one is still talking with people and understanding what they are feeling and saying.
In my work I try to offer the most reasonable and productive kinds of interventions to help my patients navigate through their problems. I try to help patients understand themselves and their difficulties and develop the positive coping skills they require to carry them through tough situations.
I have been part of the psychopharmacological revolution. When I started in psychiatry, medication was an afterthought, but over the years psychopharmacology has become more and useful in a wide variety of situations. I try to use medications thoughtfully and sparingly, following current research and looking for real changes to justify continuing any drug regimen.
