I have had the privilege of providing mental health services since 1982. To say it has been rewarding minimizes the extraordinary experience it has been working with people in this capacity. I have witnessed courage, strength, and openness beyond words. The resilience of the human spirit never ceases to amaze me.

I provide individual and couple therapy including premarital counseling. My practice consists of adults who deal with such issues as low self-esteem, relationship difficulties and work stress. I also provide services to people who suffer from depression, anxiety, the ramifications of incest/sexual abuse, obesity and its related diseases.

My approach is diversified, and I tailor treatment to each individual’s and couple’s unique needs. Some of the theories I draw from include psychodynamic (how the past impacts the present), family systems (how family relationships influence one’s life) and solution-focused (problem-solving strategies). I have an extremely warm and interactive style, and I see therapy as being a collaborative effort. In our work together, I help people develop a better understanding of themselves and find the skills they need to make positive changes in their lives. Because I come from a strength-based perspective, it is my firm belief that we thoroughly examine strengths and talents as a way to promote health and wellness.

One of the tools I often use to enhance the therapeutic process is hypnotherapy otherwise known as hypnosis. This alternative form of treatment helps people become more open to suggestion, and while under hypnosis, they usually experience a greater sense of well being. It has been found to be extremely effective in many situations. Hypnosis can be used for a wide range of issues such as those stated above as well as habit change, phobias, performance enhancement and medical conditions including skin diseases, irritable bowel syndrome and stroke. Because of the myths surrounding hypnosis, some people are hesitant about trying it. Once they undergo the experience, however, these myths are dispelled, and people come to understand that: 1) they are conscious, in fact, consciousness is heightened; 2) they are in control; 3) they will usually remember most aspects of the experience; 4) hypnosis is not magic - the power lies within the individual. I have been doing hypnosis for many years and have seen its effectiveness over and over. Along with most other forms of therapy, hypnosis will only work if the person truly believes in it.

Some people refuse to try therapy. There are those who are fearful. Others doubt they can change. Some believe they should do it on their own. Whatever the reason, they might be missing out on an opportunity for learning to make healthier choices and live a more fulfilling life. I believe it is a journey that can bring change and growth in a way one might not have thought possible.

In 1979, I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Worcester State College. A year later I entered the graduate program at Boston University School of Social Work where I was awarded a University-Affiliated Fellowship to train at Children’s Hospital for two years. In 1982 I received my M.S.W. Since that time I have taken numerous postgraduate courses including a one-year certificate in Clinical Social Work and a one-year intensive course in Hypnotherapy. My professional memberships include the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the National Association of Social Workers. Over the years, I have done presentations on a wide range of topics for various organizations.
