Therapists:
I joined Needham Psychotherapy Associates in 1993 and have found NPA to be a wonderful professional home for me. As a psychiatrist, I am the physician member of the mental health team. I provide a range of mental health services which include psychotherapy, psychopharmacology (medication evaluation and treatment), and consultation to primary care physicians regarding the diagnosis or treatment of a mental health disorder. I am a general adult psychiatrist, which means I am trained to work with adults (over age 21) with the wide range of mental health issues that bring them to seek outpatient treatment, most often in the spectrum of anxiety and mood disorders. In addition, I have special training and certification for working with the geriatric population, and at any given time approximately one third of my practice is elders. As a psychiatrist, I completed four years of medical school, a medical/surgical internship, and three years of residency training in psychiatry. This education provides me with a background in general medicine and the authority to prescribe medications. Much of my practice includes the assessment, education, prescribing, and monitoring of medications for patients. In addition, when a person first develops signs and symptoms of a mental illness such as anxiety, clinical depression, or panic attacks one of the first questions is whether there is an underlying medical illness causing or complicating these symptoms. My familiarity with medical illness and my comfort level with reviewing the diagnostic information with my internist colleagues can really facilitate this important evaluation. The heart of my practice is and always has been the therapeutic connection I strive to make with my patients. I believe no treatment succeeds without a positive mutual regard. In my psychopharmacology work I emphasize education about the medication options available, and the pros and cons of the different choices, with a goal of closely engaging my patients in the decision making process. I am also convinced, and research supports this idea, that the best mental health treatment includes psychotherapy, "talking therapy". The vast majority of my patients not only receives medication from me, but also is engaged in therapy, either with me or with one of my therapist colleagues. With my own therapy patients I like to combine a number of strategies in the therapy work, including psychodynamic, psychoeducational, interpersonal and supportive. In addition to my practice at Needham Psychotherapy Associates, I worked
for 11 years at The Cambridge Hospital and 3 years at Brookline Mental
Health Center. I received my psychiatry residency training at The Cambridge
Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and completed my internship at Beth
Israel Hospital, Boston. I have ABPN certification in General Psychiatry,
and also for Added Qualification in Geriatric Psychiatry. |
