Therapists:
My clinical practice focuses on "stuck" areas that people experience in their lives. Couples who find themselves in the "same old conflicts with no resolution" come to see me. I treat men and women who feel a sense of non-deserving and have trouble identifying and asserting their needs. I work with young adults, aged 18+, struggling to define themselves. They often present with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and /or learning disabilities. I have a special interest in adults with either acute and/or chronic illnesses including cancer, stroke, autoimmune disorders, heart disease, and seizure disorders. I also have had much experience in working with issues of loss and grief in the general population and specifically in the elderly population. Strategies that I utilize for managing pain, anxiety, and the effects of trauma include stress/relaxation techniques and visual imagery. I also offer Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), which has been shown to be effective in decreasing the impact of trauma. EMDR often reduces the symptoms of anxiety and depression following trauma by helping the victim reprocess the painful experience in a safe environment. My basic philosophy is that psychotherapy is best used to help people achieve balance in the service of living a satisfying life. Learning to accept and manage one’s vulnerabilities, whether they are emotional or physical, is essential in this goal. I work actively with my clients to help them come up with a map of their world – one that is filled with positive images and guidelines for health and well-being. My credentials include a B.A., summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Massachusetts, 1975, and an MSW from Simmons School of Social Work, 1978. I have had extensive training and experience in couples' conflicts, the impact of illness, issues of aging, and stress management. I have been certified as a Level I and II EMDR clinician. I have also been trained through the Red Cross for crisis intervention. Over the past two decades, I have given many workshops on parenting issues, stresses of being a caretaker, divorce and separation, adult children of divorce, key ingredients to a successful marriage, assertiveness training, relaxation techniques, beginning college issues, losses in the elderly, methods to avoid burnout, holiday blues, visiting the sick, tolerating differences and making decisions around religious issues.
