Therapists:
I work with a variety of problems and concerns that people present such as difficulties in life transitions, difficulty in relationships, and developmental problems. Examples include loss, separation, health issues, career changes, social concerns and academic/behavioral problems in children. Psychotherapy offers the opportunity to talk about your issues in order to get a perspective on the nature of the problem and to work collaboratively with a therapist to develop a positive outcome. My style is one of collaboration, utilizing the strengths of the client and the expertise that I bring about problem solving. I am an active partner in treatment, providing feedback and ideas, and working with the clients expertise about her/himself to bring about effective solutions. I work with children, adults, couples, and families. Ages 6-75. The emphasis is on effective communication and on the nature of the interactions in the spousal or family relationships. Two areas of specialization are issues of spirituality and sex therapy with adults. Spiritual issues concern those who are struggling with significant life issues that raise questions about the meaning of life. Another focus is to assist those who are struggling with the meaning and purpose of religion. The specialty of sexual counseling focuses on assisting adults who have sexual issues in relationships including lack of interest, sexual impotence, or sexual abuse. Sometimes sexual issues are physiological, psychological, or a combination of both. Treatment is directed at assisting persons to function better within a relationship or to be more comfortable with ones sexuality when not in a relationship. In working with children I also establish a working relationship with parents, enabling them to trust me to work effectively with their child as well as collaborating with them to find solutions. I work closely with schools when necessary. In working with families I use the understanding of family history to help family members see what thoughts and difficulties each brings to their relationships. With couples I work on communication skills and their interactions with each other. I help each partner to locate strengths in the relationship and utilize those strengths to promote growth in the relationship. I received my Ph.D. in psychology from Boston University; trained at Franciscan Hospital for Children. Further training included couples and family therapy at the Family Institute of Cambridge. My training in sex therapy was at McLean Hospital where I was also a staff psychologist and clinical instructor in psychiatry (psychology) at Harvard Medical School. Services:
